How did you create a box around the sections?

I appreciate that you are probably still working through my questions but do you have any quick instructions on how I do the following please. 

How can I create a box around the sections?

How can I set/ change the colour of the different sections? There is one with the creams background and one with a blue - I want to play with the colours it to see how it looks
